I can never understand why it is that some people are incapable of making a decent cup of tea. My aunt for example makes tea which has an inexplicable brown film on and tastes ever so slightly like a small animal has been bathing in it. It's quite an impressive talent given that we use the exact same tea, the same kettle and the same mug. It's possible that she has a gerbil stashed somewhere that she dunks in it a few times before she hands it over but that would just be weird. Also you couldn't get a more awkward situation than being caught dunking a gerbil into a mug of tea? I also find it weird when people don't drink tea at all, Well english people anyway. I allow for non tea drinkers out there in the uncivilised world where tea is hard to come-by and needs to be bought from a man with gold teeth selling prime leaf from the jacket of his trench-coat. English people that don't drink tea though are just a bit odd. What do they do when they go to someone's house? Sitting there with a glass of Tango is just not the same. Where's the common ground? What do you talk about without the question and answer session about how you take your tea? Which is kind of the point. The ritual of making tea is almost as important as the tea itself. It's carefully designed to be an all in one icebreaker, conversation opportunity and chance to judge people based on the pointless rules of manners. You go through a process of establishing the composition of the tea and by then end of it you are convinced you know each other, even though all you actually know is how they take their tea. I also never get tired of the line 'shall I be mother?' which is an essential prerequisite of proper tea making procedure. If you are making a pot then you pour some boiling water into the pot to warm it up empty it out and then add the tea bags.
