HBO airs woman's quest to save Pa. puppy mill dogs
Out in the bucolic countryside of Lancaster County is a dark, disturbing secret-- farmers are supplementing their income by breeding dogs for profit in puppy mills.
Lancaster is the setting that provides the backdrop for a new HBO documentary called " Madonna of the Mills " which debuted earlier this week.
The film follows Laura Flynn, a New York resident who travels to puppy mills in Pennsylvania and surrounding areas to rescue breeding dogs from a life of misery.
In puppy mills across the country, breeding dogs are kept in small cages and forced to produce as many litters as possible. The conditions are often unsanitary, with wire-bottom cages and little access to clean food and water. The animals are not allowed to run outside, they don't have toys to play with and they are never given treats or rewards for good behavior. Along with terrible living conditions, the dogs are often abused and neglected by mill owners. Once a breeding dog can no longer produce puppies or act as a mate, he or she is often put to death.
But Flynn has spent that past few years of her life doing everything she can to rescue dogs from these settings and increase awareness about the horrors of puppy mills. She, along with a group of friends, family and participating shelters, have rescued over 2,000 dogs.
I watched the documentary Wednesday when it premiered, and I have to say that it is a moving and eye-opening film that documents the puppy-mill industry and the lack of regulation and control provided by the USDA. It is a very powerful story that urges potential pet owners to adopt a dog from shelters instead of buying from pet stores.
It seems fitting to write about this issue on National Dog Day -- a day designated for honoring and appreciating the loyalty, love and service of our canine companions.
