Plan for wharf moves ahead
The city of Quincy is close to an agreement with a partnership formed to develop an old shoreline site into a new home for South Shore lobstermen, a wholesale processing plant for the fishing industry, and a limited waterfront walkway for the public, officials say.
Tide Mill Partners is in “the final stages of negotiations’’ with the city on a long-term lease for the project on the Town River Bay shoreline, where the historic Souther Tide Mill once relied on the tidal pulse to grind grain for local households, said Mike Cheney, a former city councilor who serves as a consultant and spokesman for the developer.
The central component of the Tide Mill Wharf development is new docking space for South Shore lobstermen and other commercial fishermen and a local site to unload their catch for on-site processing. The project would build new docks and rebuild a historic wharf that dates from Quincy’s 19th-century maritime past, dredging the channel, and reconstructing the seawall and boardwalk. The new wharf would give area restaurants a local source for fresh seafood.
“The first building would be a commercial seafood processing plant,’’ Cheney said.
The project would meet a need for 30 to 40 area lobstermen who have to go to Boston to find docking space and a place to unload their catch. “It’s difficult for lobstermen to find docking space,’’ Cheney said, because lobstermen and other fishermen have been pushed out by upscale marinas for recreational boaters.
“Cardinal Medeiros Pier in South Boston is the closest location for commercial fishermen to dock their boats,’’ partners John Urbanus and Stephen Curran state in their proposal to the city.
The regional Boston Harbor Lobstermen’s Cooperative has signaled its support by giving the partners a letter of interest.
A long-term lease agreement with the city will require the approval of the City Council. Cheney said he anticipates questions but no major problems there. “We know we can make this work,’’ he said.
