The only surprising thing about Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland’s new musical partnership is that it took so long to develop.

They have, after all, been married for more than five years.

During that time, both were pursuing their own solo careers, with each other’s help, of course. Doucet would produce and play guitar on McClelland’s albums and McClelland would sing backup vocals on Doucet’s. They also toured the world together as members of the Sarah McLachlan Band.

But they had never recorded or toured together as a duo. It was always Luke, with Melissa, or Melissa with Luke, or Sarah, with Luke and Melissa, but never just Luke and Melissa.

Until now, that is. On Tuesday, Aug. 30, the Hamilton-based singer-songwriting couple will release their first album together.

They’ve decided to call themselves Whitehorse.

OK, the name is a bit of a shock, too. Everybody just assumed they’d call themselves Luke and Melissa, or maybe McClelland and Doucet. But no, they decided to give themselves a band name: Whitehorse.

“I like to think of Whitehorse as the world’s smallest supergroup, “ Doucet says, with only a hint of a smile. “I think the coming together of these two things equates a supergroup.”

The two stopped by The Spectator last week to sing a couple of songs from the new eight-track EP (you can see the video on thespec.com) and talk about the new direction.

“We are putting our solo careers to the side for who knows how long, “ announces McClelland.

Adds Doucet: “There won’t be Luke Doucet or Melissa McClelland tours or records for quite some time.”

Then McClelland chimes in: “This is not a side project. We are putting all our creative energy into it.”

Isn’t it neat how they complete each others’ thoughts … without having a fight? And after five years of marriage - extraordinary.
