FALL AND EARLY WINTER COLOR FOR THE GARDEN

When I anticipate that we will cover the Wake Up and Go Green, I must consider the range of climate range included in the viewing area. What's good for the spectators on the bottom of the valley is of course not suitable for those who live at higher altitudes and get their snow measured in feet not inches. The difference between Paradise and Chico has a very large number of variables and between the foothills and the valley bottom there is another climatic zone which is a bit warmer than the valley bottoms and foothills. This is commonly called a â € œbanana Belta € because even citrus fruits grow well here.

The valley floor elevations of 1500-1800 feet, we still intend to have a little color in our flower beds throughout the fall and winter. High altitudes could be successful, but it's a gamble because the freezes often arrive early and lasts longer.

Thoughts, calendula, snap dragons, kale and ornamental stock are excellent choices for the fall season. In some areas, they will last through the winter and early spring. This year, I snap dragons that have flourished since last fall, even withstand the heat of summer. This will be the second winter for the thoughts that have been planted last fall. During the heat of summer, they seemed to have died so I've learned and put them in the compost pile. Some, however, escaped the fork weeding and flourished again from the roots. It seems that they are robust plants. Both can make a short-term perennials rather than annuals.

Calendula prefers cooler temperatures and safe bets for fall gardens and planters. On the bottom of the valley, they will easily last through the winter and early spring. Will continue to flower if they are dead run. If you want them to self seed a few flowers are left to grow to maturity. Even in paradise below the 1800 feet or there abouts they are performing consistently, even in very cold weather. If it snows the plants will be damaged, but usually managed to recover.
