Caring theme at Something Special event features exercise, thrift

TONEY RIVER – Something Special took place at St. David’s Presbyterian Church Tuesday.

The annual event, which is named, “Something Special,” focused on Caring for Creation with guest speakers and demonstrations in exercise, crafts and music.

Marjorie Johnson Fraser, organizer of the annual event, said she came up with the theme, Caring for Creation, after attending the National Presbyterian Women gathering in May where one of the workshops had a similar theme.

About 60 women turned out to St. David’s where they heard about the benefits of exercise from retired teacher and avid golfer Joan Clark. She quipped about having a hard time coming up with exercises that people could do in church pews, but the crowd joined in when she got them to march on the spot and do some upper body work with the hymn books.

Clark told the women that everyone should have 30 minutes of exercise a day which can be as simple as going for a walk or walking on the spot in their homes.

Keeping with the theme of Caring for Creation, Catherine Bowering told the group how she reclaims jewelry, clothing and material to make doll clothing and teddy bears.

“I’ve always recycled and reused,” she said. “The teddy bears and dolls are all recycled and reclaimed. The dolls were bought at flea markets, their dresses came from Frenchy’s or scraps of clothing and the jewelry is from yard sales.”

Bowering said very few things in her home are brand new and she rarely shops at stores that sell new items.

Church pews? Now, how do you recycle those? | Auction Finds

Church pews. That’s what I saw as the words formed in my head when I rounded the corner and came face to face with the long oak benches on the loading dock at the auction house. These symbols of religious worship seemed a strange fit among the home furnishings stacked almost from concrete to ceiling.

A few people were sitting on one of the two pews, either waiting for the bidding to start or testing them out. Or they were hoping for some miracle that would get them a good price on the dressers, chests, dining room sets, end tables and headboards on the dock. You never know if something good had settled in furniture on which many people had likely said a little prayer or some Hail Marys.

I started going to auctions to fuel my love for African American art – but at a bargain. I love the old masters: Lois Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence, Hughie Lee-Smith. I wanted to find their works and discover other veteran artists whose works may have been hiding in an attic or basement, and forgotten.

I’m a journalist by profession: I was a newspaper reporter and editor. Now, I’m taking what I did as a journalist – peeling back the covers of people’s lives and writing about what I found – and applying it to auctions. And I’m loving it.
