BRIAN EGER COLUMN: Balls kept rolling in bowling's offseason

Welcome back, bowlers. Hopefully, you've stayed active this summer and didn't lose track of your bowling ball. Here's lots of news and notes.

Reitz High School standout Matt Sanders just recently completed a great run in Las Vegas. Sanders was competing in the USBC Junior Gold Championships at Sunset Station's Strike Zone, South Point Bowling Center and The Orleans Bowling Center July 9-15. This tournament allows the nation's top young bowlers to compete for $125,000 in scholarships and a spot on Junior Team USA.

There were 1,069 male bowlers, with the top four guaranteed a spot on Junior Team USA. The tournament committee then selected two at-large picks to round out the team.

While first place had pretty much been wrapped up by Gary Faulkner of Memphis, there was still much to be decided. A rough finish in the last two games caused Sanders to come up just short of a guaranteed spot. But, with a sixth-place finish, you liked his chances of securing one of the at-large selections. Curiously, neither Sanders nor the fifth-place finisher got the nod. The committee instead went with Nos. 7 and 9.

I can understand how difficult a process it is to select at-large bids, but Sanders out-bowled both of the players. Still, this is just another impressive accomplishment for a bowler with a very bright future. Look for another top finish next year at the Junior Gold Championships.

Who says you don't get better with age? Randy Robertson turned the big "50" over the summer and got to work as soon as he could on the Senior PBA Tour. He competed along with 227 of the nation's top senior players at the PBA Senior U.S. Open in Las Vegas on June 12-17.

Robertson was well in contention to make the first cut to the cash round and stood a legitimate chance of making the top 24 for match play. But a few rough pairs on the final day left him in 59th without cash.

Congratulations go out to Owensboro's Garry Blanton on a 76th-place finish in the tournament.

Nissan GT-R Review

Frankly, it wouldn't matter what was ahead of this thing, be it a Ferrari 458 Italia or Porsche's latest 911 Turbo express, the GT-R is quicker in all manner of comparisons and its reputation as a street legal racer precedes it.

2012 Buick Regal GS: First Drive

The Regal GS starts with the hard points of the Regal CXL turbo, now the mid-level model in the four-door's lineup. The CXL's 220-horsepower output deemed too pedestrian, the GS gets a different turbocharger that runs at 20 psi, versus the CXL's 15 psi

Peak turbo boost is up about 10 percent, spark timing has been advanced, and the calibration for the electronic throttle has been redone to be a little snappier. Output is up significantly, to 325 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 354 pound-feet first reached

Posh and punchy penny-pincher

That said, the Astra's increased premium buys both an added element of style, as well as a great choice of engines, including a brilliantly powerful and highly economical range-topping 2-litre turbo-diesel, which will sit at the front of the Astra line
