Young pilots soar at 30th annual Oregon Miniature Aircraft Squadron airshow

His T-Rex 700 radio-controlled helicopter skittered on the ground as white smoke billowed, then suddenly shot up nearly vertical.Mallory, 11, guided it in a few flips and upside down, then flew so high it became nearly invisible against the overcast sky. He let it fall, spinning, before zooming off again just over the surface of the Lewis Farms pond, the site of the Oregon Miniature Aircraft Squadron 's air show Saturday and today.
In between events, such as a flying lawnmower and combat planes, the 15 to 20 pilots who attend may fly anything. Today, there will also be a couple boat races by a local radio-controlled boat club. The event, in its 30th year, brings together the people who like to tinker and the ones who like to fly.
"I like the mechanics of everything," said club president Jay Fonville. "I like working on them, I like to fix things."
The Mallory family's hobby grew from a dud Air Hogs plane Matt Mallory bought his son for Christmas three years ago to the five aircraft they have now. "We find it's a great father-son hobby," Matt Mallory said, even though he is more prone to crash than his son."It's a good discipline for him because there's a lot to focus and concentrate on," Mallory, from Tigard, said.
Hours playing video games helped Nathan Mallory with his flight skills. The aircraft are controlled by two thumb sticks that determine direction and thrust. It can be daunting to master, so most pilots spend hours using computer simulation software before taking flight.

RC Heli Trex 600 Custom Camera Skid - RCVideos.TV
In several of my videos I use this custom made skid mounted to a Trex 600 ESP with a Go Pro Hero camera to obtain the videos. This skip is made from 1 inch flat 3/8 aluminum bent to match the original skid angle of the Trex 600. All skid materials were purchased at Home Depot or Lowes. I them formed a frame in front high enough to mount a hanging camera frame attached with small bungee cords. I attached the bungee cord rather loosely because when I stretched it tightly there was too much viberattion in the camera. The camera frame does not tough the skid frame. Then to isolate the helicopter vibration I attached the skid to the heli with loosely wrapped hook and loop (velcro type) material, just loose enough to allow the helicopter to rise about 1/4 of an inch above the skid. This way the helicopter will be held into to place to land back on the camera mount skid just as it was at take off. This solution to aerial video and photography isn't as good as a $5000 solution but it works pretty satisfactrally. At a later date, sooner than later, I hope to build a frame to hold one of the lighter weight Canon Digital SLR, probably a Canon Tsi.
