Mid-LT Men’s Retreat

The men doing Leadership Training this summer experienced what some called “the best men’s retreat I have ever been on.” God has really been at work in the hearts of all of our men and there have been so many stories of growth and freedom from sin and addiction that it’s absolutely mind blowing. This past weekend, Johnny LaLonde, a Christian counselor and good friend of Tim Courtois, New Life’s counselor, came up from Florida to speak truth and wisdom on the topic of sexual purity. What some churches and believers view as taboo and inappropriate to talk about, New Life has fully been devoted to tackling the issue head on and fully believing James 5:6 that when we confess our sins and are open about them with others, we can receive healing and freedom through each other’s love and prayer.

One really awesome part of the weekend was the fact that it was just the guys. As simple as it sounds, it was so powerful that we had the opportunity to be open and vulnerable with other men in our lives. For some men, this weekend was a further dive into openness and sharing things that they never thought they would share with anyone. For others, it was a chance to ask real questions that go on in the minds of every man. We had a question/answer session with Johnny at the end of his talks where he was able to speak truth into questions that have at some point been on almost every man’s heart that was there. However, the most amazing part of the weekend was how blunt and straightforward the talks were. Johnny held nothing back and knew that as men, we didn’t need to be caressed or hold hands with each other, but rather hear it like it is and really dig deeper into issues that we were struggling with.

So many men have been struggling with the fact that they cannot get over a certain sin in their lives and it has really weighed them down. Through the talks, Johnny helped show what it means to be under the power of addiction in specific areas such as pornography, sexual relationships, lust, same sex attraction, etc. It was clear that his insight was very much from God and many men were able to make huge connections to reasons for their addiction, helping them to learn more about themselves and how to grow in this area. One story in particular that really stood out was from a guy who has done LT more than most men on the retreat, who has been a part of New Life for a long time now and he said that this was the most meaningful men’s retreat he has ever been on and felt like God spoke to him in ways he never experienced before. Now, this man has relayed to me that his 30-day prayer goal of wanting God to remove the shame in his life has been answered! For so long, he has felt weighed down and held back by shame and now, he feels a sense of freedom and excitement to see God do even bigger things in his life.
