Carleton Names Five Faculty Members to Endowed Professorships

Northfield, Minn.––Carleton College has named five faculty members to endowed professorships: professor of political science Barbara Allen , professor of linguistics Michael Flynn , professor of history Susannah Ottaway , professor of music Ronald Rodman , and professor of classics Chico Zimmerman .

Barbara Allen has been appointed the Ada M. Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professorship in the Social Sciences for the next three years. The Ada M. Harrison professorship was designed to recognize excellent teaching on the part of Carleton faculty and enrich and enhance the teaching of social sciences at Carleton. Allen received her BA with honors from Indiana University in 1973 with a double major in political science and environmental studies. She received her PhD from IU in 1981, and taught in the Kelley Graduate School of Business (IU) for two years before joining the Carleton faculty in 1988. At Carleton, Allen has chaired the department of political science and directed the women’s and gender studies program. She has served on numerous College committees, and is currently a member of the Carleton’s Visualizing the Liberal Arts (Viz ) initiative, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation , and the College’s Quantitative Inquiry, Reasoning, and Knowledge (QuIRK) Initiative steering committees. All of Allen’s courses include an experiential learning component; most include a project in which students learn one or more quantitative and qualitative research methods. The most ambitious of these projects is the Carleton Election Study, which Allen began in 2000. This project initially brought together students in three Carleton courses to study election news coverage and advertising using content analysis and focus groups of Northfield citizens. Allen and associate professor of political science Greg Marfleet expanded the project in 2004 to study local news coverage and citizen responses to political ads and news in five Minnesota cities. Allen and Marfleet won the 2005 American Political Science Association Rowman & Littlefield Innovative Teaching Award for their work on the 2004 study. The project has continued with studies of election news coverage and political ads in 2008 and 2010. Numerous student comprehensive thesis projects and independent study projects, as well as publications by Allen and Marfleet, have emerged from this study.

Gadgets n U !! » Charge Your phone While Walking With Power ...

We all know that we make a lot of kinetic energy just by moving around, and we all need energy to power our mobile devices. This is why researchers at the University of Wisconsin in Madison are working on a harvester that stores all the energy that we create by strolling, running, or walking.

The power sneaker features the option to plug a phone into the shoe, but researchers Tom Krupenkin and J. Ashley Taylor sought a less cumbersome approach. They found the biggest draw on your phone’s battery occurs when it’s searching for Wi-Fi or a cell tower signal, so they attached a Wi-Fi transmitter directly to the harvester. The shoe, not the phone, powers the connection to wireless signals. They say that means your battery can last up to 10 times longer.

The device is also able to be directly connected to a phone, which could be useful for soldiers toting night-vision goggles, or marathoners who rely on their iPhone 4’s music for motivation. And with no moving parts, the system requires minimal maintenance, making it a boon for those in areas with little or no electricity.

Tom Krupenkin, a UW-Madison associate professor of mechanical engineering, says that human beings generate a kilowatt of power while sprinting. That is more than enough to power laptops, flashlights, and mobile phones. This technology that you see in the sole of the shoe here uses reverse electrowetting. It is the process by which the energy of moving liquid is converted into electricity, and the energy generated through walking is about 20 watts of electricity.

The developers of this technology created a company called InStep NanoPower, and envision their first product as the “Walk and Charge”. I suppose that we are looking at a future where we connect our devices to our shoe when we get to where we are going and work on our laptops, cellular phones, and other devices. According to the Source, this makes a cell phone battery last 10 times longer. Of course, there is a problem with the cord connected to one’s shoe. Perhaps there could be a removable battery pack on the sole, but it might smell funny when placed on the table.
