How To Stop A Dog From Peeing In The House

Even dogs that have been completely housetrained, or which have just relieved themselves outside can mark in the house with the right trigger.  Dogs mark in the house for entirely different reasons that are not connected to simply relieving themselves.

Why do dogs scent mark in the house?

Marking in the house can start in male dogs when they are about three months old, though it may appear in different dogs at different ages.  It’s also possible for some females dogs to mark in the house.  Dogs have an extremely well-developed sense of smell and they leave urine sprinkles as a way to tell other dogs about themselves and to leave messages.  When a dog marks something with urine it gives information about his sex, age, health, social status, and other things he wants to convey to other dogs.  Your dog usually does this outdoors by peeing or sprinkling against a tree or bush. This marks his territory.  But he will also pee or sprinkle on something in the house in some cases.  If you move into a new home, if you have a new baby in the house, if you are dating a new person, if you have a female dog in heat, or for other reasons, your dog may feel like he needs to make a display and reassert his position and he will do this by peeing or sprinkling on something to mark his territory in the home.  Some dogs will also mark territory when they are anxious or for other reasons, but most male dogs will scent mark in the home when they think they need to reassert their position for some reason.  In a way they are saying, “This is my place and I will protect it.”  It’s usually a little bit of male dog machismo.

Stopping the behavior

There are some good ways to stop your dog from marking in the house.

Neutering your dog

Most dogs that scent mark are intact, meaning that they have their testicles.  You can usually stop marking behavior by having your male dog neutered.  This works for most male dogs.  However, if the behavior has become a serious habit then having your dog neutered may not completely stop the behavior.
