UPDATED: Tyler Farrar may continue in 2011 Vuelta a España despite stage-7 crash

That Farrar did not break any bones during the fall after colliding with a rider about 125 meters to go as the peloton was winding up the sprint. Though badly banged up and bruised, Farrar will take stock in the morning before making a decision about continuing in the Vuelta.

“The good news is that nothing is broken. He’s badly banged up and bruised from the blow of the crash, but he has no broken bones,” Garmin-Cervélo sport director Bingen Fernández told VeloNews . “We just got him back from the hospital (at 10 p.m. Spanish time). Our doctors here will examine him more and then we’ll take a decision to see if he can continue in the race. Tomorrow is not an easy stage. We will see how he sleeps tonight and how he feels in the morning.”

Fernández said Farrar did not know what caused the crash and said he will try to review some race video this evening to take a second look at the full-sprint crash that took him down.

Farrar only shook his head as he gingerly stepped off the Garmin-Cervélo bus and did not speak as he was carried by two team soigneurs toward a team car. The pain was so intense that they called to a waiting ambulance.

Farrar was one of the favorites for Friday’s sprint finale, but appeared to be boxed in as the pack barreled toward the line at 65kph. Farrar moved to his right when he spotted a gap and collided with a rider who appeared to be Michel Golas (Vacansoleil).

Both went tumbling to the ground, with Farrar landing hard on his back and rolling over, only to have other riders collide into him from behind.

Other riders crashed in the wake of the crash, including GC favorites Michele Scarponi (Lampre-ISD), Jurgen Van den Broeck (Omega Lotto-Pharma), Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) and Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale). None of them seemed seriously injured.

The American sprinter was able to finish the stage, but could not turn his left leg in the pedals as he was escorted to the team bus 250 meters past the finish line.

Vuelta a España Salamanca - Salamanca

Scarponi is a huge 4:30 down at the finish - that's a huge dent to his GC hopes. Red jersey Bauke Mollema could only manage the 24th best time at the first check, 53 seconds down on Wiggins' effort. Janex Brajkovic faded a little towards the end to set

I can never figure out why the GC guys feel the need to “protect” themselves by being that far up front with a chaotic sprint finish. There's the 3k rule; hang toward the back so you don't hit the floor and let the sprinters do their crazy thang!

Two different men, two different bikes, same time in Vail

The two Americans sit atop the GC after the third stage on Vail Pass, but how exactly did such different circumstances lead to such a narrow stage win for the former? Leipheimer and Vande Velde, 37 and 35 years old, respectively, are veterans of the US

“Later in the Vuelta, I'll look for being far down on GC, and then I'll be able to go for the stage victory that I want so much.” Sagan though, despite claiming to not be feeling so good, ominously had his eye on the Córdoba finish.

European Chances at the PGA Championship

And with an average score of 66.8 from his last five rounds - fourth round at the Canadian Open played at a wicked Shaughnessy GC in Vancouver, and four rounds at Firestone last weekend - he appears to be in the sort of form that secured eight straight

The Impact of a Dirty Marijuana Extract on Pesticide Recoveries from ...

To quantify the unclean extract?

Let me go back a bit and give you our Agilent 6890 Split/Splitless GC inlet conditions to set the stage for the recovery table I want you to review.  For a 1µL splitless injection we used a Sky™ 4mm ID single taper inlet liner with wool at 250°C and a purge valve time of 60 sec.  The GC column flow was 2 mL/min, which gave a GC inlet flow of 1.6 mL/min.  Now some of you are probably saying, “Waitaminute, how did he know that inlet flow?”  It’s because I use a handy, dandy Pressure/Flow Calculator that you can download free from Agilent.  Others are wondering, why does the inlet flow matter?  Well, it’s because a general rule of thumb for a splitless injection purge valve time is to set it so the inlet has been swept approximately 1.5 to 2 times before opening the split valve.  This should , if the sample extract is particularly dirty, and especially if it contains a high concentration of non-volatile material like chlorophyll , the analytes have to “chromatograph” out of the co-injected non-volatile material to get to the GC column.  And that may be more difficult if the liner contains wool, and it does, in this case.  This leads to seriously reduced recoveries (via poor transfer) of less volatile analytes of interest, which can be seen in the table below.  Hopefully you astute blog readers out there (do we have any other kind?!) have noticed another effect, and that is degradation of DDT , which inflates the DDD result, since DDD is a degradation compound of DDT.  Also note the complete loss of Dicofol in the unclean extract, a DDT-like pesticide that is even more sensitive to “dirt” in the inlet.  THESE RESULTS ARE FROM THE FIRST INJECTION OF THIS DIRTY EXTRACT!  YES, I AM SCREAMING AT YOU!  But only in print…

OK Jack, get to the point.  In summary, cleaning up your sample extracts for GC can be VERY important, especially for ruggedness of any method.
