Waller hungers for excellence

BY TAFT COGHILL JR.

Michael Waller is a cross country and track and field standout at Chancellor High School with a work ethic coaches say is uncommon for his age.

But when he was growing up, he couldn't walk through the mall without telling his parents he was tired. He often complained on family outings to Washington that he was ready to go home.

Michael Waller Sr. was concerned about his son's lack of interest in physical activities. He eventually placed his son in the Great Train Race, a youth run in Fredericksburg that features 3,000 kids.

"If he was in a group of 100," the father said of his son's performance in that race, "he finished 99th."

Still, Michael went out for track and field at Chancellor Middle School as a seventh-grader. He struggled then, too--until his father encouraged him to give cycling a try.

Michael Waller Sr. is a former sniper in the Marines, and he builds bicycles at his Spotsylvania County home. He regularly participates in 100-mile bike rides in Salisbury, Md.

Michael joined him for one ride when he was 12 years old. He completed his first race in seven hours, and he was thrilled with the experience.

When he returned for another event, Michael left his father behind, cycling 100 miles in four hours, 30 minutes.

"After that," Michael Waller Sr. said, "his drive went crazy."

Michael's legs haven't stopped going since.

He set track and field records at Chancellor Middle in eighth grade. He won the Group AA state title in the 800 meters as a sophomore at Chancellor, and repeated as state champion in 2011.

Now a senior, Michael hopes to defend his Battlefield District cross country title. He's aiming high in the Region I and state meets, as well.

"He's not one of those kids that wants to be a good runner," Chancellor cross country coach Nate Brooks said. "He wants to be one of the greatest runners in this area."

Michael certainly trains that way.
