A cheap — but effective — fix
CAYUGA - Sometimes all the techniques of costly wastewater treatment in the world does not work as well as shed some straw and pool noodles swimming in a pond and hoping for the best.
This is the lesson of the village of Cayuga, where engineers have used common sense and cheap materials (temporarily) to prevent a sticky situation at little cost to taxpayers.
The problem has to do with the lagoons of the village sewage treatment off of River Road.
Wastewater through a pipe into the first pond and remains there while the solids settle to the bottom.
Clean water then flows into a second nearby pond, where it loses more bacteria before being chlorinated and discharging into a stream leading to the Seneca River.
When the 1.5-hectare ponds were built in 1967, they were a common way to manage wastewater.
Now, the village trustee Ron Erickson said, there are only a handful of lagoon systems still in use throughout the state, most towns and villages clinging to more advanced treatment plants.
At Cayuga, the first pond has a surface of pea green duckweed, an organization that helps unsightly but beneficial to filter the nitrogen and phosphates.
In the second pond, however, all organic matter in raw sewage leads to algal blooms that hamper the purification process.
"When you have too much algae in the water when he goes to chlorination, the algae absorb all the chlorine and we could not get the disinfection we needed," Village Public Works Superintendent Dan Patterson said.
The result: water flow into the river that was not clean enough to meet the standards of the State Department of Environmental Conservation.
The DEC issued a consent order in 2008 requiring the village to take action to solve the problem, either by improving the lagoon system or install a treatment plant.
The village made its goal of a plant 7 million with the ability to treat wastewater of all the houses in the village and some in the town of Aurelius.

A local farmer then told Erickson that he'd seen barley straw used to control algae blooms in stormwater retention ponds. As the barley decomposes underwater, it releases compounds that inhibit the growth of new algae. The village ran the idea by the

The Pond in the Summer: Reduce Algae and Increase Oxygen ...
Summer can be a difficult time for pond owners. If it is a glorious time to sit around the pond and enjoy the water, the pond itself requires maintenance summer. With the summer heat coming algae and a lack of oxygen in water, and two of them can stress pond life.
Control algae in ponds wasWhen the heat is on, the algae can flourish. Pond algae loves the summer sun and heat. Algae also grows on the nutrient pool. This means that when a mare gets a lot of hot fish food, fish waste or fertilizer to the lawn, algae blooms may occur. While some of the pond algae provides a ready source of food for tadpoles and aquatic invertebrates, many of algae can be a problem. When the algae dies, the decomposition process can starve aquatic animals of oxygen, leading to fish kills.
Pond algae control by providing shade around the pond and reducing fish populations to numbers that can effectively manage the pond. In spring, the pond clean and remove debris fall and winter and nutrients, giving the lake a fresh start. While there are products that kill algae control pond weeds, be wary of adding herbicides to the pond because they can also damage the pond life.
Monitoring and analysis of water quality in the pondDuring the summer months, to test the water quality in the pond. Test for nitrates to ensure that fish waste is not to build to toxic levels. If so, reduce the number of fish, reduce feeding or cleaning the pond. Another important test of the summer water quality testing for dissolved oxygen. Use a water meter or a water testing kit to search for dissolved oxygen. Ideally, it should be in the range of three to six milligrams per liter. The more oxygen in a pond, the best for life pond.
Pond Bubblers use, ventilation, pumps and fountains add oxygenIf there is little oxygen in the pond, the use of bubblers, venting systems, pumps and fountains to add oxygen to the pond. A pump circulates the water pond around the pond and the pond filters. The natural flow of water adds oxygen to the water as well. A decorative fountain pond, but the water that falls into the pond with a fountain or a waterfall also add precious oxygen for the pond water. Bubblers and venting systems add other supplemental oxygen when the pumps and fountains are not sufficient.
