DRESSING UP [Daily Press, Victorville, Calif.]

Rena's Dresses aims to not only provide dresses to girls who can't afford new ones, but to offer them what Greiser calls the "boutique experience." Rather than a quick handout, she envisions assigning each girl a personal stylist to pull together an entire outfit, having volunteers on hand to do alterations and creating a fun ambiance with music and refreshments. "I promised her that all the volunteers from Rena's Dresses would help her get ready, and that her mom would be smiling down from heaven," Greiser said. "Another girl had never used makeup or dressed up before, and I saw her transform from an already beautiful but introverted little girl to a full-of-confidence young lady. She was radiant." The girls were treated to pink cupcakes by The Cake Shop, fresh flowers from Peter Noel, professional hair and makeup stylings from Generation Salon and costume jewelry from Girly Girl. They traveled to a private dinner at Mama Carpinos in a Hummer limousine with their dates, who were given tuxes by Tux-Egos. "At the end of the day the girls walked around looking like movie stars," Greiser said. "There was so much love in the room, so many volunteers came out -- I have never experienced anything like it. It seemed that our town came together to help." Rena's Dresses now has a stock of about 220 dresses, ranging from $20 cocktail dresses to $600 designer gowns. A local teacher has donated closet space in her home for temporary storage while Greiser searches for a more permanent space. Greiser said she and her volunteers have a long way to go before prom season. "They're just trickling in," she said. "In order to do all the schools in the area, or as many as possible, the goal is 1,000 dresses by February." Natasha Lindstrom may be reached at (760) 951-6232 or at NLindstrom@VVDailyPress.com.

It was early June and the last high school athletic event of the school year was a city wide track and field meet held at Norfolk Hi. It was a big deal and all the major high schools were there competing.

Mario and Christina (Bahama Mamma) were there also rooting for Norfolk Hi.

During one of the athletic breaks, Christina  (Bahamas Mama) was in the girls restroom and over heard three of the girls sadly tell the story that they will not be able to go their Senior prom this year.

The girls further related that their parents could not afford to buy them a prom dress and they were too embarrassed to attend the dance in regular street cloths.

Christina interrupted their conversation and asked what their names were.

Christina said. “All three of you are going to your Senior Prom, I will see to it that you have lovely dresses to wear”.

Christina further said, “my boy friend and I are going and we will expect to see you there”.

The very next day Christina picked up all three girls in Taxi cab Green Streak 396 and drove them to the Norfolk Tux shop where they rent both men and women’s formal attire.

The girls tried on several dresses then picked the ones they liked the best.

Christina paid for the dress rental and they left the store, the girls called their boy friends and told them they would be able to go to the prom.

It is Saturday night in June, 1952 AD, and Senior Prom night at Norfolk High School.

Mario picked up his tux and a pink and white carnation wrist corsage for Christina (Bahama Mama).

He hired taxi Green Streak 396, and arrived at her attractive small house in Norfolk’s African American district.

He knocked on her door and who appeared was, with out doubt, the most beautiful woman in Norfolk, Virginia.
