Pat O'Brien
George Bolton and Fog City Stable's THE FACTOR (War Front) was returning from an injury-induced layoff, and tackling older horses for the first time, in Sunday's $250,000 Pat O'Brien S. (G1) at Del Mar, but the talented sophomore easily surmounted all obstacles with a near track-record performance. Shortening up to a sprint after dropping off the Kentucky Derby (G1) trail, The Factor disposed of 7-5 favorite Smiling Tiger (Hold That Tiger) and kicked clear to hand Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert an unprecedented fifth Pat O'Brien trophy."When this horse is really on his game, he is an extraordinary horse," Baffert said. "I'm just glad to have him back. He's got the most beautiful stride I've ever seen on a horse. It's like he barely picks up his feet."
The Factor, who had not raced since his disappointing seventh in the April 16 Arkansas Derby (G1), was a relative latecomer to the Pat O'Brien. His original target was the seven-furlong King's Bishop S. (G1) versus fellow three-year-olds on Travers Day, until Baffert became concerned about racing over a deep and demanding Saratoga surface in the colt's comeback. Last Sunday, Baffert announced that The Factor would instead stay at Del Mar for the Pat O'Brien, also at seven furlongs, but against his elders. At least The Factor was working sensationally over the local Polytrack, and he ran right up to those works.
Although The Factor broke alertly for Martin Garcia, he was immediately hooked by Smiling Tiger. The multiple Grade 1-winning four-year-old had his head in front through an opening quarter in :22.41, but The Factor was still on cruise control while he gained the advantage through a half in :44.28. Leaving the far turn, Smiling Tiger could not keep pace with his younger foe.
The Factor pulled away by a length in midstretch and reached the six-furlong mark in 1:08.60. Any notion of his laboring in the final furlong was soon banished, as he increased his margin to 1 3/4 lengths at the wire. Rather, Smiling Tiger was the one who weakened. Passed by Camp Victory (Forest Camp) and then by Crown of Thorns (Repent), the favorite was relegated to fourth late.

SMILING TIGER (Hold That Tiger) will take the next step on his road to the November 5 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) when facing five rivals in Sunday's $250000 Pat O'Brien S. (G1) at Del Mar. The seven-furlong contest is the co-undercard feature on Pacific
It was a big weekend of racing on both the East and West Coasts with the Travers, Pacific Classic, King's Bishop, Pat O'Brien, and a host of other great stakes action. The Sprint division became a lot more crowded and now includes a (somewhat) new

Trainer Mike Machowsky had weighed a few options this weekend for CARACORTADO (Cat Dreams), including Sunday's Pat O'Brien S. (G1) and Pacific Classic (G1) on the Polytrack, but ended up settling on Saturday's $200000 (G2) on turf.

The villain (albeit, a lovable villain) of the piece is also its star, Pat O'Brien, as tyrannical nightclub manager John Quinn. He's a stinker, but we root for him all the same, even as he mercilessly berates his staff or scams hapless visitors to the

In a speed duel and drew off in the stretch to win the $250,000 Pat O'Brien Stakes (gr. I) comfortably at Del Mar Aug. 28 ( VIDEO ).
Sent off as the narrow 17-10 second choice to Smiling Tiger, The Factor was ridden to a 1 3/4-length victory by Martin Garcia for trainer Bob Baffert and owners George Bolton and Fog City Stable. Baffert won the Pat O'Brien for the fifth time in his Hall of Fame career, including the past three in succession.
The Factor, out of action since finishing seventh in the Arkansas Derby (gr. I) April 16, earned his first grade I victory. The gray/roan son of third. Smiling Tiger faded to fourth.
The Factor became the fourth 3-year-old to win the Pat O'Brien in the race's 26-year history.
Smiling Tiger fought for the early lead on the outside under Joel Rosario and showed good early speed as he and The Factor vied head-and-head for the opening half-mile. They burned the opening quarter-mile in :22.41 and the half in :44.28.
“I know we went fast early," Rosario said of Smiling Tiger, the 7-5 choice. "Maybe too fast. He just got real tired.”
The Factor, along the rail, took a short lead into the turn and inched away to a one-length advantage over Smiling Tiger at mid-stretch. The Factor kicked away under steady urging and was not threatened in the final furlong as Smiling Tiger gave way.
"My horse was running easy," Garcia said after registering his first stakes win of the Del Mar meet. "He took me up in there without even trying. Then I was going easy and (Smiling Tiger and Rosario) were trying. By the quarter pole they were gone.
"My horse is really fast. If you take him back, he loses interest. And you saw it today: not only is he fast, maybe as fast a horse as I’ve ever ridden, but he’ll keep on going. He wasn’t getting tired or backing up there at the end at all. He’s a really nice horse.”
Camp Victory, chasing the pacesetters in third while racing a bit off the rail for Joe Talamo, angled out in the stretch and finished second by a half-length over the closing Crown of Thorns and Garrett Gomez. Crown of Thorns got up for the show spot by a head over Smiling Tiger. trailed in a field of five.
