Migrating Documents From a Legacy DMS to SharePoint
There's been a great deal of interest in converting legacy document management systems to Microsoft SharePoint in the legal industry and beyond. Compelling reasons for doing so include reduced costs, robust API, broad third-party support, as well as tools for integrating SharePoint with other firm systems. To date, the discussion has focused principally on the suitability of SharePoint as a DMS, on the compatibility of SharePoint with common third-party add-ons -- such as those for standard forms generation, metadata stripping, or document comparison -- on security, and on the need to support ethical walls . While more remains to be done, significant progress has been made in addressing these concerns.
One concern that remains largely unaddressed is that of converting documents from a legacy DMS into SharePoint. After contacting several vendors in search of an off-the-shelf document migration utility, without success, my firm decided to take matters into our own hands. The problem, on its face, seemed straightforward: extract the documents along with associated metadata from the DMS, and push those documents and metadata into SharePoint. As we learned, solving this problem involved puzzling through our legacy DMS's database structures, mapping incompatible security architectures, and addressing issues of scale that arise when converting millions of documents.
The following article is a distillation of what we learned, presented in the hope that it may prove a useful framework for others in their attempt to set their documents free.
GETTING FROM HERE TO THERE
Having a clear plan of attack is critical for any complex project, and there are few projects more challenging than a DMS conversion. At a high level, Figure 1 below depicts the steps you will need to take to move documents from a DMS to SharePoint:
There are certainly other important issues that will need to be addressed, such as selection of a DMS front-end for SharePoint (unless you plan to use SharePoint's native user interface), user training, and records management, but my purpose is to focus on that subset of issues relating to document migration, so I only mention these additional issues in passing.
Nomenclature Of Bridging Complexes - News
While each vendor uses their own tables and nomenclature, all document management systems, as well as SharePoint, have structures that correspond to the above diagram. Were you to open your legacy DMS database and view its structure, however,
The first step, of course, is being able to articulate who the enemy is beyond the intentionally vague nomenclature of "terrorist" or "extremist." Moving beyond Ms. Elliot's purposeful deception that she was not writing about me, we come to her writing

For compounds containing a metal, we use the Stock system which means that we write the name of the metal along with a Roman numeral indicating the oxidation number, followed by the name of the anion.
For compounds of two nonmetals, like SiCl4, we use the Greek prefix system which uses prefixes to tell the number of atoms.
Therefore, we don’t use “tetrafluoride” with a metal.
============== Follow up ==============
The distinction is not “ionic” vs “covalent”, it is “metal” vs “nonmetal”. That’s because there are many compounds containing a metal and a nonmetal that do not exhibit ionic bonds. In fact, SnF4 is not nearly as “ionic” as we might think. In the other tin(IV) halides, SnX4, the bonds are clearly covalent. The electronegativity of many compounds is much higher for higher oxidation numbers.
Anyway, the IUPAC naming convention is to use the Stock system for metal-nonmetal compounds and the Greek prefix system for nonmetal-nonmetal compounds, like SiCl4.
