Salvadoran activist Saul Solorzano's work lives on
September 2, 2011
The center of Central American refugees began with a strong emphasis on issues of war and legal aid. Solorzano, who became executive director in 1992, made its strategic move to serve the broader needs of immigrants such as employment and affordable housing and ostensibly changed its name to the Resource Centre in Central America. Over the years, the agency has helped tens of thousands of immigrants through various stages of obtaining a legal status, and Solorzano was his guiding force.

Solorzano his wife, Wendy, and their four-year-old daughter, Camila, in the family home in the district. "Sometimes it seemed like a child himself, rolling in the yard and swinging on the swings with his daughter," Wendy Solorzano said. "I do not think he had much time to be a child in El Salvador."
Solorzano had in recent years gone through a series of public and personal change, after years of hard work. In 2006, he married Wendy, and Camila was born a year later.Last year, he stepped aside as executive director Carecen, became president with less paperwork, so he can devote his time to public education. He made a first foray into politics, seeking appointment to a vacant at large seat on the CC. In the last month it was considering a run for an elected seat.
This poster was displayed at the memorial service for Solorzano. In a recent grant application, Solorzano said he was inspired by the heroes of the past as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.. but also by the ongoing struggles of "my neighbor" in poor communities "My vision for social change is a constant movement where we - the people - which can range from small to big victories" in a push for a permanent "positive change," he writes.
