Natural Disaster Sites Breed Serious Infections

NAPA, CALIF. - Although the risk of an outbreak of severe disease after natural disasters are rare and often exaggerated by the media, it is important to be prepared to respond to infection of patients after such an event, according to Dr. Miriam S. Bettencourt, University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Some patients may have conditions after natural disasters include bacterial and fungal infections, leptospirosis, measles, dengue fever, trench foot, arthropod bites, and exposure to radiation. DrBettencourt described some of the conditions in detail during his presentation to the coastal Symposisum dermatology.

Vibrio

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, there were 18 reported cases of Vibrio-related illnesses due to exposure of wounds of patients in the coastal waters against flooding. The warm seawater from the Atlantic Ocean that flooded the Gulf Coast was the perfect breeding ground for V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus.

Following the rapid onset of the disease, V.vulnificus was identified in 82% of reported cases, and V. parahaemolyticus in the other 18%, said Dr. Bettencourt. Patients were aged from 31 to 89, with the majority being male (83%), five patients died. Comorbidities that may have made people more susceptible to infection, such as heart disease and diabetes, were identified in 72% of patients.

Vibrio infection begins as swelling, erythema and pain, and if left untreated, can progress to hemorrhagic blisters, necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis.

If patients need to work in conditions such as those found after Hurricane Katrina, they should wear protective clothing to prevent exposure to water contaminated wound. They must also wash the wounds with soap and water after exposure to water to reduce the risk of infection.

Transmission, Treatment, and Prevention of Dengue Fever ...

According to the Centers for Disease Control, dengue (pronounced "DENG gay") fever affects between 50 million and 100 million people worldwide each year. A dengue epidemic has broken out in Key West, Florida in 2009 and continued in 2010. describes a debilitating disease that is usually more intensely one month of onset of symptoms. Here, the means of transmission, treatment and prevention of dengue fever are described.

Transmission of dengue

Dengue is mostly transmitted by the bite of the mosquito Aedes aegypti (the mosquito Egyptian), and occasionally by Aedes albopictus (the Asian tiger mosquito). Although Florida is the site of current entry of dengue fever, these two mosquito species are found in most southern states, and on the East Coast, Southern New York and New Jersey south of the Florida, with most people being in the southern states from Florida to California, and transient populations have been found as far north as southern Maine.

The virus is taken when the mosquito bites an infected person or animal. After a maturation within the mosquito for a few days, the virus is activated and can be transmitted to new hosts. But dengue fever seems to require long periods of high temperatures to become infectious, even if it appears in the Northern States, the risk of becoming semi-permanent set is less there than in southern states like Florida , Texas, and others.

United States Sites With dengue epidemics

Although dengue fever had been established in Florida and Texas in the early 20th century, the disease was eliminated by the year 1940. He disappeared and reappeared in Texas along the Mexican border in the 1980s, coinciding with outbreaks in major Mexican cities. Dengue was not diagnosed in Florida from 1935 until 2009. An isolated cluster of cases of dengue fever occurred in Hawaii in 2001 - seems to have been triggered by a holiday maker who contracted dengue fever while in Tahiti.
