Cross-country biking crew lends construction skills to Habitat projects
Volunteer crew leader Dick Twilde, center, instructs participants of Bike and Build as they work on a Habitat for Humanity home Wednesday morning on Shindig Street off of Mullan Road. Bike and Build participants pedal across the U.S. to raise funds for affordable housing projects. Twilde says this is the fourth year a crew has come to a site to help.
It's 4,000 miles from Providence, R.I., to Seattle not as the crow flies, but as the bikes pedal over state highways and America's backroads.
Biking that route has been the task of 29 cyclists, who stopped in Missoula on Wednesday not to rest, but to build a house.
"This is the coolest city we've been to," said Lily Smith, who pounded nails into fresh lumber of a home off of Mullan Road on Wednesday morning. "We're not around a lot of liberal youth culture."
Smith and her fellow cyclists - including a woman from Missoula - are members of Bike and Build, a nonprofit collection of young cyclists that annually makes seven cross-country trips, stopping every 500 miles or so to slap on tool belts and help construct homes for charities like Habitat for Humanity.
On Wednesday, they worked on two Missoula Habitat for Humanity homes - Nos. 43 and 44 - which Habitat expects to be owned and occupied by two local families by Thanksgiving.
The sudden arrival of a motivated crowd of free labor gave Habitat crew leader Dick Twilde a bit of a dilemma.
"Our biggest problem is finding enough things and enough tools to keep them occupied," he said.
Yet they all seemed to have plenty to do as they installed laminate flooring, put up Sheetrock and installed windows and window frames.
Among the group was 23-year-old Alex Campbell, who graduated in the spring from the University of Montana with a degree in human biology.
Campbell, who volunteered with Missoula's Habitat for Humanity all through college, was inspired to make the continent-trotting bike journey when she met the group last year. Bike and Build has been to Missoula four straight summers.

The first steps toward carbon freedom were canoe trips on the Bitterroot River near my home in Missoula, Mont., with my friend Nick and his dog Katie. This was necessity, not environmentalism: Nick had a car, but no canoe; I had a canoe, but no car;
Advanced-Rookie: Missoula 7, Orem 6. (36-19) Tied at 5 apiece going into the eighth inning, Orem struck with a go-ahead run in the top half of the frame. That, however, only served to add drama to the biggest hit of the night, as Ty Linton crushed a
portable rocket mass heater / free cycles missoula | Eden Pure Heater
Www.permies.com This style starts off with three big missions 1) rocket mass heaters for apartment dwellers. the idea is that this can be taken apart, put on a truck, moved, and put back together. I was hoping that the time it would take to get it loaded onto a truck would be much less than an hour. We did demonstrate that. I was hoping that the time it would take to rebuild it would be less than an hour – in the end we missed that by ten minutes. I think under an hour can be carried out. two) A distinct aesthetic. This rocket mass heater has a wood frame. To my understanding, this is the initial time this has been carried out. three) A lighter design for locations that have wood floors that do not hold a lot of weight. The fact that there is a LOT of duct in this design does make it considerably lighter. I think we had achievement in all three of these. Along the way, we also came up with some other improvements. A) Rather than a brick core with a heat riser that sits on best, we have the heat riser go all the way to the ground. This eliminates a bottleneck when the burn tunnel (square) and the heat riser (round) meet. B) Ought to use a square burn tunnel. So the walls of the burn tunnel are defined by bricks, and a brick bottom is defined by a single brick who’s height can be changed based on the quantity of sand under the brick. C) Sand as the mass turned out to be a poor concept. Greater to have pea gravel and rocks. Air is allowed to move via the mass – so there is greater transfer of heat before the exhaust exits. This …
I built a small R M stove, 4 in, T stovepipe, vert feed, the capped end is clean out, connected to an elbow, 4 in,wide riser within a outer pipe, ash and gravel in between, lower section is cob, stones embedded., I connected , opened on both ends, Hi-C type can to cover all of the exposed wood that hangs out of the feed hole. The fun part now is not watching the sideways burn you see on all of these vids, but and UPSIDEDOWN burn that is also smokeless and too cool for words.
