Lemann Awards recognize contributions to civil service system

Five Louisianans will be honored during the 46th annual Monte M. Lemann Awards luncheon Friday at noon at the Royal Sonesta Hotel.

The awards, presented annually by the Louisiana Civil Service League, are given to individuals outside the classified civil service system who have made major contributions to the advancement of the merit system of public employment in Louisiana, said Daniel E. Sullivan, executive vice president of the league.

The award is named for Monte M. Lemann, who was a staunch defender of the merit civil service law in its formative years in Louisiana.

This year's winners bring the total number of recipients to 228 since 1965. Tickets to this year's luncheon are available at the league's New Orleans office by calling 504.522.3875.

This year's winners are:

Robert Boland of Baton Rouge. He recently retired as general counsel for the Louisiana Department of Civil Service after almost 30 years of service. He grew up in El Dorado, Ark., served three years in the Army and came to Louisiana after completing law school in Fayetteville, Ark., in 1973. After several years of private practice of law in Baton Rouge, he was a staff attorney with the Department of Health and Hospitals and was then chosen as general counsel for the Department of Civil Service. He filed and prosecuted an action resulting in a state statute which added members to a city commission that was in violation of the Civil Service Article of the constitution. DeeAnna Jurisic of Belle Chasse. She has been a member of the Plaquemines Parish Civil Service Commission since 2000. A native of Buras, Jurisic graduated from Buras High School in 1980 and has been a resident of Plaquemines Parish for the past 49 years. She received a bachelor of science in elementary education from Our Lady of Holy Cross College and has been an elementary school teacher in Plaquemines Parish the past 18 years.
