Lollapalooza 2011: Q&A with British rapper Tinie Tempah

When Tinie Tempah, 22, had to make a decision between attending college and pursuing a music career, he took a leap of faith that landed him just where he had dreamed. The U.K. native, born Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu, debuted three hit singles, selling more than 1 million singles in the U.K. alone. This charismatic and driven artist gives listeners a deeper sense of who he is in his latest album, Disc-Overy. Tinie says he is determined to leave crowds wanting more at Lollapalooza, being held Friday-Sunday in Chicago.

Q: Tell me how you started getting into music.

A: I first stumbled across this group in England doing rap to a certain degree and hip-hop with a British spin on it. They were talking about things that were relevant to British kids and the British way of life. I was really excited by that. For me, hip-hop was something that belonged within America, and I was basically inspired by them and started trying to do what they did. The rest is kind of history.

Q: Who were some of your biggest inspirations?

A: I'm pretty much a musical kid. I really loved Eminem, DMX and Jay-Z in the earlier days. I love, more recently, Lil' Wayne , Drake, Nicki Minaj . I also really like Stevie Wonder as well.

Q: When did you know you wanted to pursue a career in music ?

A: It was more like a fork in the road. I was filling out the application for university, and I was thinking, 'I'm about to dedicate three years of my life spent on a campus towards learning a subject I'm not really 100% sure I really want to do. Do I commit to this? Or do I just take a bit of time out and put 100% into pursuing the musical career?' At that point, I was 18, and I said 'You know what, I'm still young, I'm going to give myself a couple more years.' And I'm really happy I made that decision.
