Plaza gets tenant for Mi Cocina spot

The Country Club Plaza has been looking for a new Mexican restaurant since Mi Cocina closed three years ago.</p><p>It was closed for more than two years as one restaurateur made plans to open Blue Agave there. That restaurant never opened.</p><p>Earlier this year another restaurant group &#x97; with a partner from Frida&#x92;s Contemporary Mexican Cuisine in south Overland Park &#x97; said they would open a restaurant there and base it on Frida&#x92;s cuisine. The Frida&#x92;s partner dropped out of the deal this summer and took his recipes with him, but the restaurant is still a go.</p><p>Z&#xF3;calo &#x97; Mexican Cuisine & Tequileria is to open at 620 W. 48th St. on Sept. 19.</p><p>Partners Tony Durone, a Kansas City lawyer, and Chris Ridler, owner of Sol Cantina, have gutted the space, starting fresh with glass &#x93;walls&#x94; that will slide open accordion-style to two outdoor patio areas. Indoors there will an elevated dining area, center lounge and private dining space.</p><p>Ivan Marquez, co-founder of Frida&#x92;s, dropped out of the deal when he disagreed with the direction of the operation. He wanted to keep the Frida&#x92;s name and also was concerned that his cuisine would be secondary to the tequileria.</p><p>But Durone disputes that: &#x93;Make no mistake: We are extremely food-focused.&#x94; </p><p>He has hired chefs from 801 Chophouse and North, and also a chef consultant from a Chicago contemporary Mexican restaurant.</p><p>Menu items will include braised short rib, chorizo meat loaf, seafood enchiladas, seared scallops with bacon-plantain mash, a BLT with chipotle mayonnaise, and French toast with tequila-soaked dried fruit, tres leches sauce and cinnamon apple syrup. Lunch items will range from $9 to $14, and dinner entrees from $12 to $27.</p><p>Z&#xF3;calo also will offer hand-crafted margaritas and sangrias, seasonal fruit-infused tequila cocktails and other signature drinks.</p><p>Z&#xF3;calo will have about 60 to 70 full- and part-time employees.</p><p>Meanwhile, Marquez plans to expand Frida&#x92;s at 14861 Metcalf Ave., adding a private party room and patio.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">West Bottoms entrant</span></strong></p><p> A new West Bottoms operation is simply named Franks and has a simple decor &#x97; chairs, tables, and a counter for ordering.</p><p>But its menu is not so simple.</p><p>Dan Clothier, who restored the Freight House for such restaurants as Lidia&#x92;s Kansas City, has set up the new gourmet hot-dog place at 1623 Genessee St. </p><p>Customers order charcoal-grilled hot dogs, sausages and brats, or a special beef and pork wiener from Vienna. Then they can pick their own toppings or some of Franks&#x92; creations, like the Chihuahua, with frijoles rancheros, diced onion and cheese sauce.</p><p>Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. </p><p><strong><span class="subhead">Quick bites</span></strong></p><p>&#x95;Oklahoma Joe&#x92;s Bar-B-Que is in final negotiations to take the former TGI Friday&#x92;s space in Camelot Court, at 11723 Roe Ave., Leawood If the deal is completed, it could open by late winter or early spring. The company also has locations in Kansas City, Kan., and Olathe.</p><p>&#x95;Intentions, in downtown Overland Park, has a new owner who is changing the concept from a live music and sushi place to a 1920s-type speakeasy/cabaret. </p><p>The operation, at 7316 W. 80th St., will have a &#x93;small plate&#x94; menu featuring items a table can share. On Fridays and Saturdays the servers will perform the cabarets. On Mondays it will have live big band music, and on Thursdays a jazz trio.</p><p>&#x95;Omaha-based PepperJax Grill plans to open in Highland Plaza, 10150 W. 119th St., Overland Park, in November. It will be its second area location and its 10th restaurant. </p><p>&#x95;Bar Louie, a Texas-based chain, has signed a lease for the former Ted&#x92;s Montana Grill space at 101 E. 14th St. in the Power & Light District. It is to open Sept. 6. </p><p>Bar Louie is known for its fresh fruit shots, and its small plates &#x97; wings, pot stickers, Bavarian pretzel sticks with a trio of dipping sauce, and loaded tater tots.</p><p> Meanwhile, the owners of Talk of the Town Grill & Bar in Overland Park purchased the former Ted&#x92;s Montana Grill space at 5201 W. 135th St., Leawood, for a second location to open in late October. The building has a patio on the west side, but Talk of the Town will add another patio on the east side that will be partly covered and include a fireplace and TVs.

PALM BEACH, FL- No, Tiger woods didn’t lease executive office suites in Palm Beach, but he did move his golfing empire headquarters to a $1.4 million office building in Jupiter, a city in Palm Beach County, Fla. You could rent a serviced office space in the area, though, and be Tiger’s new neighbor.

According to The Palm Beach Post reports. “The building features a large corner office with balcony, private restroom and shower, according to marketing materials. Interior features include French doors, a wood-paneled executive office and hallways ringed by imposing white columns.”
