Ficano: Mullin's leadership 'compromised;' airport meeting set for Monday Christine MacDonald and Steve Pardo/ The Detroit NewsDetroit — Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano issued a statement this afternoon saying the scandal over Turkia Mullin's severance "has become an obvious distraction" to Detroit Metropolitan Airport and that her leadership has been "compromised."
"Turkia Mullin is very talented and resourceful, but unfortunately the situation she finds herself in has become an obvious distraction that will continue into the foreseeable future," Ficano said in a statement. "I am disheartened that the promise the board saw in her has diminished.
"My vision for Aerotropolis has always been to have a strong leader at the helm. I believe under the current situation this has been compromised. When the board meets next week, they should proceed with what is best for the continued success of the airport and this region."
A special board meeting of the Wayne County Airport Authority has been called for 1:30 p.m. Monday to review whether Mullin can remain in her post as airport CEO.
The News reported Friday that Mullin is losing support among her bosses. Two board members, Bernard Parker and Sue Hall, have called for her removal.
Parker said the time is right for the authority to have a discussion — at least — over Mullin and the circumstances surrounding her position.
"We do have the authority to make any decision or take any action at this point," Parker said.
Parker said he called for the meeting and was glad other airport authority members agreed. Parker voted to hire Mullin as airport CEO, saying she was the best candidate at the time. But now, he said she has become a distraction and he wished she would vacate the post.
"We need to come together," he said. "I think it's important we have some questions answered and have a discussion. I want to hear from attorneys and the airport authority.
