Blotter: Wendy's worker assaults patron who complained, burglary and more

Battery

A 19-year-old Wendy’s employee was charged Aug. 27 with assault and unlawful consumption of alcohol. Police said she lunged at a customer who complained to the manager about receiving poor service. The employee was fired on the spot and again assaulted the complaining customer in the parking lot of the restaurant, 6585 Illinois Route 132, police said. An off duty police officer detained the former employee until she calmed down. Police said her blood alcohol level tested at .145 percent.

Drugs and alcohol

A 19-year-old man was charged Aug. 28 with driving under influence of alcohol, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia after police found him passed out in his vehicle in a restaurant parking lot in the 6400 block of Illinois Route 132.

A 16-year-old girl from Lake in the Hills has a date to appear in juvenile court after she was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia at Six Flags Great America.

A 17-year-old female from Wood Dale was charged with possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana under a local ordinance at Six Flags Great America.

Burglary

Items valued at nearly $6,000, including two Macbook laptops, clothing, paper and blood pressure and diabetes diagnostic equipment were reported missing Aug. 28 from a Chevrolet Traverse parked in the Walmart lot, 6590 Illinois Route 132.

The front door was shattered sometime overnight Aug. 26 to Aug. 27 at two Great Clips, locations, one at 6695 Illinois Route 132, the other at 5326 Route 132. About $200 cash was reported missing from each store.

The door on a 2001 black Chevrolet Equinox was opened sometime before 10:30 a.m. Aug. 28 while it was parked in the lot at Six Flags Great America.

Wire valued at $800 was reported missing the morning of Aug. 26 after break-in to a construction trail at the Warren Newport Library, 224 N. O’Plaine Road.

Theft

Two girls from Racine, Wis., ages 16 and 17, were issued tickets for retail theft after they were observed taking clothing and jewelry the afternoon of Aug. 28 from Kohl’s, 6120 Illinois Route 132. About an hour later, a 17-year-old Waukegan girl was cited for retail theft when she was observed taking clothing and shoes.

TBR 313: Exploring the Great Circle Route

As an inducement to subscribe Mrs Martin tells us that her Collection is not to consist only of Novels, but of every kind of Literature &c &c - She might have spared this pretention to our family, who are great Novel-readers & not ashamed of being so;" -- Jane Austen, Dec. 18, 1798 isn't a full-on travelogue, or even a complete account of their exploration of the Great Circle Route in 1931, looking at air routes between America and the Pacific.  After an overview of previous voyages dating back to 1508, and an account of the preparations for their 20th century voyage, the book becomes a series almost of vignettes.  AML narrates stops in Canada, Alaska, Russia, and Japan: encounters with locals (who may or may not be natives), descriptions of scenery, discussions of the practical details of flying.  The weather and her responsibility for the radio are constant preoccupations.  The last stop was in China, which was suffering disastrous flooding along the Yangtze River.  The Lindberghs volunteered for survey flights to determine the scope of the disaster. A trip to one city to deliver a doctor and medicine turned suddenly dangerous as frantic people, desperate for food, stormed the fragile plane. AML writes in her introduction that at the time of their visits in 1931, the kind of travel, of contact, made possible by flight was on the point of changing the world.  She thought it important to record these points of contact, as these changes were just beginning, to leave a record not just of the changes but of what came before.

Lisa, I'm so glad to have discovered your blog! I too have been through a period of fascination with the Lindberghs, and I like AML's writing. But according to my records I haven't read Bring Me A Unicorn (I have Hour of Gold, Hour of Lead and Gift From the Sea) or North to the Orient, so now thanks to this post, they're now both on my TBR list!
