Neudorfers created area business legacy

(Editor's Note: This is the second of a two-part article about The Diaper Ice Cream Bar, a longtime fixture at Allen's Crossroads in Rostraver Township, and its owners, Russell and Mary Belle Neudorfer.)

Allen's Crossroads in Rostraver Township was "truly a great place to call home" - very different from its early days than it is today.

So said Jerry Elaine Neudorfer Klimetz of Cooper City, Fla., whose parents - the late Russell and Mary Belle Neudorfer - owned and operated The Diaper Ice Cream Bar at Allen's Crossroads for many years.

The site is now home to the Rostraver offices of First Federal Savings Bank of Monessen.

"We had The Diaper Bar, The Dog House, which was originally located where Wendy's is today; Camino's, which moved into that spot after The Dog House relocated down the road toward the new highway; Hileman's Service Station, where Rite Aid Pharmacy is located, and the Allen family homestead, which stood on the site of what is now A&W Long John Silver's," Klimetz recalled.

"Later came the (Super 71) drive-in theater and things really got busy in that area," she said. "It wasn't anything near what exists today and I don't think anyone ever dreamed that area would be developed and evolve into the major business and shopping area that exists now.

"There are national stores (Walmart and Lowe's), restaurants, a large, modern hotel (Hampton Inn) and a variety of smaller but essential businesses. On the other side of Route 201 are Kmart and Tri-County Plaza. Obviously that growth has helped the economy of Rostraver Township but it also is something that is good for the entire region.

"My parents would have found all of this just unbelievable."

Living in that area also meant that Klimetz was close to school, LaGrange Elementary and Rostraver High - but not far enough away in terms of qualifying for transportation.

"You had to live at least one mile from the school to be allowed to ride the bus," she said. "Our home was exactly nine-tenths of a mile away, so I walked to and from school. It made no difference what the weather conditions were, we walked up and down that road.
