One beautiful afternoon, I was in a posh restaurant to lunch a plate of Eba with afang soup. While eating, a sexy-looking young man sauntered in. I spared him a glance but I was about to swallow a boil of eba … I heard a voice beside “do you want some more?” I was appalled and at the same time felt awkward...but I kept it within me and just said “no thanks, will call you if I do”...assuming it was the waiter. Invariably, when the person persistently stood there, I had to look up and behold it was the ‘new entrant’.

We were kind of silent for a while, thereafter conversation ensued but by then expediently, I was done with my meal. During the conversation I was compelled to ask him if he was not having lunch. Unbelievably, he mentioned that he came into the restaurant because of me. That he sighted me and he couldn’t resist; he had to take a chance. Such measures: I mused.

I was in a complicated emotional relationship then and in the middle of a decision-making so I was not really in the mood to venture in any chat. So my words were mainly monosyllables and all he said fell into ‘deaf ears’. Furthermore, when I couldn’t take it any longer, I tried to excuse myself but to no avail until he successfully extracted my phone number from me: even at that, he said that it’s the least I could do… {Such nerve}!

Eventually, I got to my office and momentarily forgot about him as I got busy dispensing my duties. It was when I was tidying up my desk getting ready to close for the day that I was jolted by the sound of my phone’s caller tune. I checked the caller name and it was Melvin; the guy I met at the restaurant. I put the call on busy and continued with my task.

Melvin kept calling my number till I was forced to ponder on who persists more when they want something; ‘man or woman’? Anyway, I kept putting him on hold until one lovely weekend while I was on the bed listening to music, I instinctively called him. By then, I was relaxed and had sorted out my emotional baggage: so I had room to talk; and talk…we did. Woah! We really got talking on phone and magic was enacted. We discovered so much common ground and were able to flow, laughing and all that without inhibition, I fell in love on phone… I felt the ecstasy of love; at the end of the prolonged chat, i fell asleep smiling and woke the next morning still with a smile on my lips.
