K's add another scoring defenseman, 2 forwards
– The Komets have, for many years, had defensemen who put up prolific offensive numbers.This season – the team’s 60th – should bring more of the same.
The Komets signed defenseman Simon Mangos on Wednesday, giving Fort Wayne three blue-liners – Mangos, Jamie Milam and Frankie DeAngelis – that combined for 33 goals and 124 points last season.
“When you combine Mangos, DeAngelis and Milam, that’s like having a couple of 65-point forwards,” general manager David Franke said. “We really have a potent offense from our defense, and if you look at the history, since we’ve had (ownership of the club) we’ve always had offensive defensemen on the team.
“Go back to Denny Lambert, Frederic Bouchard, Guy Dupuis, DeAngelis, Kelly Perrault and Bryan McKee, we’ve always made it a priority to have defensemen who can contribute offensively, too.”
Last season, Mangos, 31, had five goals and 32 points in 61 games in helping Bossier-Shreveport to the CHL championship. He is the third member of the Mudbugs, who folded this summer, to join the Komets, joining Milam and forward Brett Smith.
“Simon Mangos was a very key component of that championship team last year,” Franke said. “He wanted to play closer to his (Ontario) home than where he was in Shreveport, and when they went out of business, we started talking to him, as did a lot of teams. He liked our situation.
“He’s a great skater, a skilled type of defenseman. He really moves the puck well. He’s got some offense to his game. ... He’s a winner.”
The Komets also signed forwards Adam Krug and Shane Heffernan, bringing their roster to 16 players.
They hope to have about 35 when training camp opens Oct. 10 at Memorial Coliseum.
Krug, 28, is the brother of Matt Krug, who played for the Komets last season. Adam Krug had 30 goals and 81 points last season in 40 games with Nijmegen in Holland.
