Residents hungry for power in the wake of Hurricane Irene
According to Dominion Power , which services the vast majority of those without power in North Carolina and Virginia, 1.2 million customers are in need of having service restored. The company expects to complete an assessment of damage and have an estimate of when restoration for all customers will be complete by noon on Monday. This will be the second-largest restoration after Hurricane Isabel in 2003.
AP reports that the Colonial Pipeline, which transports gasoline and other fuels from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast, stopped fuel deliveries to Selma, N.C., and to Virginia's Tidewater area as the storm knocked out power. Colonial Pipeline's website states that they are working with customers to restore service to all areas supplied by the Houston-to-New York pipeline.
Sam Liptrap of Atlantic Beach siphons gas from his car to fuel his generator. Liptrap, who owns the Sand Dollar Hotel, says Hurricane Irene cost him $2,500 in lost revenue this past weekend. Atlantic Beach was largely spared from the worst of the storm, but residents are likely to remain without power until crews can repair feeds to the area, which could mean more vacant rooms in the coming days for Liptrap.

New Zealand alcohol law reform changes | Stuff.co.nz
The Government has accepted 130 changes suggested to its controversial alcohol reform bill - including a ban on dairies selling liquor.
After months of consideration and thousands of submissions, the Justice and Electoral Select Committee has tonight released its report on the Government's controversial Alcohol Reform Bill.
Among the changes, grocery stores would have to keep their alcohol sales and promotions cordoned off in an inconspicuious part of their stores and dairies would be banned from selling alcohol.
Justice Minister Simon Power said the Government had agreed to accept all 130 substantive changes to clauses in the bill "to help us build a strong and enduring legislative framework to reduce alcohol-related harm and support a safe and responsible drinking culture."
The report recommends inserting new clause to require supermarkets and grocery stores to display alcohol in only one area of the store.
''This clause also stipulates that the alcohol display area must not be in a prominent area of the store, and would restrict alcohol advertising and promotions to that designated area,'' it says.
It also says ''convenience stores'' should be banned from selling alcohol.
Power said he intended to see the Alcohol Reform Bill through its second reading before the House rises on October 6. Further progress this parliamentary term was dependent on House time.
With 700,000 problem drinkers in this country costing taxpayers over $4.4 BILLION in alcohol-related damage, death, lost productivity, etc, we need some fairly radical changes to the marketting, availability, pricing, etc, of liquor. Otherwise our social problems are going to get worse and the death rate will continue to climb. It is no longer "fun" when we have situations like this: http://tinyurl.com/3lcmu65 .
The question remains whether or not our politicians will have the guts to address this problem? I think not. The liquor industry is pretty damned powerful in this country.
