"Both grandmother and aunt had Alzheimer's, so I knew what he looked like - and it scared me. I had experienced some difficulties with memory for a while when one day, I 'I decided to test me.

While driving to the Stanford Research Institute, where I was the director of research on infectious diseases, I tried to do multiplication tables in my head. I could not remember how to do them. I thought, "Why I can not do simple math?" That's what brought me to UCSF for diagnosis. Of course I was devastated.

The first thing I did was go online, where I found the Alzheimer's Association. Through the association, I met many people who, like me, have had to stop working well before the normal age of retirement.

Part of my career as a researcher is working with Elan Pharmaceuticals on a therapy for Alzheimer's disease. I tried to reduce the amount of amyloid plaque in the brain by making antibodies against the proteins of the plate. When I was diagnosed with the disease, I knew immediately that I wanted to be part of a clinical trial of Alzheimer's.

You only get to participate in a clinical trial and I wanted to find the best for me. After meeting with leading experts in the field of research of Alzheimer's disease, I decided to join a clinical trial at UCSF, where I receive an antibody against a protein of the amyloid plaque that is an extension of the work I have done very Elan Pharmaceuticals.

I feel like if I win this lawsuit is successful or not. If the monoclonal antibody does not work, we learned that we must move on. However, even if it works only partially extend the time people are cognitively functional, this would be enormous. And if it works as we hope - well, it would be just fantastic.

When I got my diagnosis, I thought that was the end. But now I have so much energy and I want to do something useful. We must be more visible and let people know that Alzheimer's is a cliff that we are about to fall of. As a biomedical researcher, I was very impressed with the performance of people with AIDS are advocates for a cure. It is more difficult to be a powerful advocate when living with Alzheimer's disease, but I am determined to do so because it is a cause that excites me.
