Cape Police: Thieves targeted construction workers

Cape Coral Police are asking people to lock up their cars after string of burglaries in the Southwest Cape. There were three in all and they were within two miles of each other. They say the thieves targeted construction workers.

Scott Gagnon, a general contractor, is one of three construction workers robbed this week.

"Went back to get my other truck and realized the tools were all gone," said Gagnon.

He says they were stolen right out of the truck parked in his own driveway.

"Well this is what they got - the Dewalt combo kit - like that," he said.

The toolbox and the tools inside are worth more than $1,400. And Gagnon says he's not only out the money.

"By them stealing tools out of one of my trucks, now we're working three men out of one truck making it difficult," he said.

He says it is bad timing because having to share means slowing down and that means less work.

According to police reports, the thieves struck between August 22 and 23 - taking everything from plumbing tools and copper fittings to an $800 tool kit, a $450 in miscellaneous hand tools and a toolset.

The renovations inside Julianne Settanni's Cape Coral home are now off schedule. With limited tools, only so much work can be done.

"He's a hard working guy, been here seven days a week," said Settanni, who had hired Gagnon. As for Gagnon, he says it's a lesson he learned the hard way.

"Oh for sure I'm putting in a security camera on that side of the house with some spotlights for sure - try to protect myself better," he said.

Meantime, police continue their investigation, entering prints into evidence and questioning neighbors.

According to reports, one of the victims left his garage open. The other two left their vehicles unlocked.
