Five questions for Illini football

CHAMPAIGN - It's fine to believe the Illini will finish the upcoming college football season 4-8, or that they'll go 9-3 or that they'll stun the national and run the table to a perfect 12-0 campaign.

It's fine because until Saturday it's just conjecture.

But starting Saturday we'll finally get answers to questions that have been taking shape ever since Dec. 29, the night Illinois capped off its 38-14 victory over Baylor in the Texas Bowl.

That's when a number of factors began falling into place including the departure to the NFL draft of running back Mikel Leshoure, linebacker Martez Wilson and defensive tackle Corey Liuget.

We've watched the team go through spring practice, through Camp Rantoul this month and this week they'll zero in specifically on the first opponent, Arkansas State.

It doesn't really matter who Illinois opens against. But it matters that Saturday is when we can finally make judgments on the unanswered questions that still linger. Here are five of them:

How good is this defense going to be?

It's the No. 1 question going into the system. Most agree the offense, which averaged 42 points a game over the final seven games last season, will be fine. But the defense has something to prove.

Yes, the defense did jump from 91stto 38thnationally in the first year of defensive coordinator Vic Koenning's instruction. And that came despite a 67-65 triple overtime loss at Michigan that exposed just how little depth the defense had.

But replacing Liuget and Wilson won't be easy and the players being counted on to help there have been fighting training camp injuries. With practice closed to the media, we'll have to wait until Saturday to see whether defensive tackle Akeem Spence and linebacker Ian Thomas (shoulder) are good to go.

When little linebacker Ashante Williams was suspended indefinitely after his DUI arrest, they probably upgraded that position by moving Trulon Henry into Williams' slot. But in the process they weakened themselves at safety, so there are questions there as well.
