Food labels may not tell you everything: Healthy Living
Squishy, fun candy Peeps have a curious connection hogs.
Those marshmallow pumpkins, ghosts, chicks and other fun shapes (seasonal) contain pork derived gelatin.
This is not necessarily a problem for everyone - except those on the vegan, vegetarian, kosher or halal.
And although the ingredient information is readily available on the manufacturer's Peeps' Just Born Co., consumer buying in the grocery store would not immediately report the source of gelatin just by looking at the label.
This is true of a number of ingredients on packaged foods in stores and in the case of dairy products and freezers.
These food ingredients are sometimes called "hidden" because the names list - as "dietary fiber" or "dough conditioners" - are not revealing, at first sight.
The government requires labels with the ingredients listed by the most abundant at least on packaged foods. The eight most common food allergens - milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, soybeans and wheat - must be listed. If there is any suspicion of these elements in food, you will see phrases such as "may contain soy" or "contains wheat" on the label below the list of ingredients.
But then there is the MetroHealth Medical Center dietitian Janeen Leon called boilerplate phrases like "natural flavors"
"It can be derived from wheat, it can be derived from strawberries - you just do not know," said Leon. And modified food starch? "Is gelatin? Is starch? Is it corn? " This could be problematic if you happen to have specific food allergies, she said.
If you are not sure, Leo advises looking at company websites and contact the manufacturers.
Some companies are protective of their formulas. But she suggested that if you have a specific allergy, you could explain this to the company and whether the "natural flavor" of their product contains this ingredient specific - like strawberries or kiwis.

1. Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl Parabens.
Why used? A preservative. It’s cheap.
Where used? Shampoos, makeup, moisturizers, toothpaste and food.
Dangers: A report in the New Scientist 2004 stated that in an analysis of 20 breast tumors that “high concentrations of para-hydroxybenzoic acids (parabens) [were found] in 18 samples. Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers. The preservatives are used in many cosmetics and some foods to increase their shelf-life.” The jury is still out on whether parabens are to blame. But even the American Cancer Society says that more research has to be done to establish if parabens have an effect on breast cancer risk.
