Hunterdon businesses that help control energy costs
America runs on electricity. In the shorter term, the nation is largely dependent on coal, oil, and natural gas to supply most of the electricity. Lesser amounts of power come from nuclear, solar, windmills, hydroelectric, and biomass. The nation is undergoing changes in electricity generation. Almost a dozen years ago, New Jersey established a policy pushing solar generation of electricity in the state. It is working.
"In New Jersey we have more solar per square mile than in California," said Mark Warner. The industry is rapidly expanding, and he says it will entail multi-billions of dollars in construction over the next 10 to 15 years.
Warner heads the Sun Farm Network located on Minneakoning Road in Raritan Township. He began setting up the company back in 2001 and currently employs about 25 people.
This operation (908-782-4172, www.SunFarmNetwork.com) is a full-service solar company. Warner and his team work with residential, commercial, business, farm and not-for-profit clients. They design, construct, install, and maintain solar systems all over the state. The company has completed hundreds of projects, small and large. Some of Sun Farm's larger installations include wholesale power plants that can serve whole neighborhoods.
"These are solar power plants," said Warner. "They can take up to two years to build. They are for anybody with larger property." When completed, neighbors can buy their electricity from the installation owner.
Getting away from coal and oil will take many years, he said. He projects that some 30 percent of electricity will be generated by solar farms by 2050.
Sunshine is free, but building a solar power plant can be costly.
"The challenge is how to pay for solar projects," said Warner. Payment agreements extending 15 to 20 years are possible, and Sun Farm Network maintains the installation during this period. Tax credits are possible on installations.
Another local company involved in alternative energy installations is located in Pittstown. It's called Hunterdon Solar And Wind Energy, and it offers solar as well as wind turbines.

“Incidents with significant consequences continue to occur on gas transmission pipelines, and this action will help us determine whether new requirements are needed to increase safety,” Cynthia Quarterman, head of the department’s pipeline oversight agency, said in a statement.
A 2.5-million-mile (4-million-km) network of pipelines crisscrosses the United States, carrying everything from crude oil to natural gas to refined products such as gasoline and jet fuel.
The department launched an oil and gas pipeline safety initiative in April after a series of high-profile accidents in the country’s aging web of pipelines.
