Niamh's friends gear up to raise funds

The family and friends of a little girl who was diagnosed with congenital heart disease and a hole in her heart at just three weeks old are gearing up for a massive fundraising event for two charities.

The British Heart Foundation and the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF), a charity which supports the children’s heart unit at Leeds General Infirmary, will be the beneficiaries of the fundraising drive at the Gallopers Pub, in Busfield Street, Bradford, on Saturday, September 3.

It has all been organised by the friends and family of 16-month-old Niamh Maguire, including her mum Morwenna Watson, dad Carl Maguire and grandma Jody Watson.

A mini fete takes place from 1pm to 5pm, featuring a giant bouncy castle, stalls, tombola, car boots sale and kids karaoke.

Katie Bear, the CHSF’s mascot, will also be making an appearance during the day before an evening event at the pub from 8pm to late, which will see sponsored waxing and shaving, a raffle and karaoke, all in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

During the day a group will also complete a sponsored 18-mile walk from Skipton to Saltaire .

Niamh, who has a four-year-old brother, Kyle, was born at Bradford Royal Infirmary weighing 9lbs, but when her weight dropped to 7lb within three weeks, she was admitted to hospital where a heart murmur was found.

The little girl was then transferred to Leeds General Infirmary for a heart scan, which is when she was diagnosed with congenital heart disease and ventricular septal heart defects –- a hole in the heart.

Her mum, 27-year-old Morwenna, of Springwood Avenue, West Bowling , Bradford, said: “My dad had a hole in his heart when he was born and her dad’s brother has congenital heart disease.

“Because there are heart problems on both sides of the family I was offered extra scans when I was pregnant, but nothing was picked up.

“It was only when she started losing weight it was diagnosed.
