PCC Notes: Training given to industry workers
With its customized training program, Pitt Community College using its mobile laboratory to provide welding training to welding and certification for employees of Farmville Mestek, Inc.
Over the past two months, welding instructors CPC provided a pair of 40-hours during MIG welding at a total of 13 employees Mestek. The latest round of training began September 12 and will continue for two weeks before concluding with a welding certification test for the six employees who participate.
PCC welding instructor Bobby Perkins, who taught the first class in August Mestek, said employees were he worked with "ecstatic" education they received and have learned a lot.
Mestek plant manager agreed and Emerson Hobgood said in an email to PCC administrators that he was "very impressed" with the mobile laboratory welding Pitt and training of its employees had received.
"All the guys are almost giddy participants of what they learn," he writes.
Hobgood said that many welders Mestek has never received training in welding prior notice to the instruction they received from the PCC.
"They were simply told to practice and learn to weld the bead, or that," he said, adding: "I've had several employees over to ask when their turn will be."
PCC received a mobile laboratory welding grant funding in 2007 to provide on-site training to a variety of industrial sites and remote areas of eastern North Carolina.
Mestek, Inc., operated a plant in Farmville in 1975.The company produces gas unit heaters and hot water, ovens on the roof, and the speed of central systems pump air conditioning / heating. Their products are sold under a variety of familiar brand names, including Trane, Sterling, Dayton, Beacon Morris and Spacepak.
