Background

• Please describe yourself in a sentence or two.

I am an actor, based in New York- Member of SAG since 1977 (Backround work in “ Unmarried Woman”) First principle role – Jack Able in “ Stardust Memories” , most recent “ Jefferson Davis in “ Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter”- A successful career, a good marriage (28 years)  and two great kids. I fell in love with acting in High School and my interest in and passion for the thing has never really diminished . I have always enjoyed the company of actors and actresses- and although I have many friends in other walks of life, they are some of my favorite people in this world.

• What's your background as an actor: how did you come to acting, what do you like about it, what are some key credits, and can you share any interesting experiences or an anecdote or two?

I started acting in High School, although it was not my major at Wesleyan, where I went to college, I made films and performed in plays. I  went to Yale Drama  “75, where former president  Alan Rosenberg was my classmate-moved to New York and have been acting ever since. I have worked extensively in the theatre, which I love and which continues to challenge me- I am a lifetime member of the Actors Studio, a member of the Actors Center Workshop Company, the Ensemble Studio Theatre. I began my film career in a Woody Allen movie and appeared in three others in the 80s- I was in the original “Ghostbusters” as the Librarian Roger Davenport, and also played the librarian in “ Sophies Choice” working all too briefly  with another Yale classmate Meryl Streep. I have appeared in close to 100 films- got to play Meryl’s husband in “Prime”  and you can check IMDB for a list. I have worked extensively in Indy Film, Low Budget and Lower Budget. I also wrote, starred in and produced “ Good Night Valentino” with Eduardo Ballerini playing Valentino . I played H.L. Mencken and the film was an official Sundance Short . I have appeared five times in various “Law and Order”- from one on the earliest in the first season to one of the last. Naturally, I have worked in commercials and voice overs . I enjoy encouraging young actors to believe that an actors life in New York can be very fulfilling.

Arnold Schwarzenegger gave bulging, rippling life to Robert E. Howard's muscle-bound pulp hero, and director John Milius built a credible representation of Howard's prehistoric fictional realm of exotic kingdoms, forbidding ancient temples, and remote,

Where Hollywood has historically been at a loss is with a small but distinctive category of actor one might call tweeners: those performers who may not have the star power to carry a movie yet they have a stature, a bearing, a resonance that,

Stephen Lang: Conan the Barbarian is not big on subtext

This film seeks to reach back to the roots that Robert E. Howard put down for the character. Speaking to the film's attention to the world Howard created, Lang says: It's great to be part of Howard's universe, I'll put it that way.

a better actor than the young Arnold Schwarzenegger but a lesser presence, and this new movie based on Robert E. Howard's classic pulp stories plays like product. It's tolerable enough in 2-D but unwatchable sludge in 3-D. Costarring Stephen Lang,

Stephen Lang on Conan the Barbarian and Character Roles: 'I Don't ...

, The character actor was looking for a departure of sorts, and he found it in the mythic fantasy landscape conceived by Robert E. Howard playing a bloodthirsty warlord in Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian .

Lang, who’s built a film career out of playing various sorts of cowboys, villains, lawmen, and strong-jawed types, seems to seek variation within the mantle of character actor while simultaneously straining against it. “I think if I’d been offered sort of a paler version of Col. Quaritch from Avatar Well, when they sent me the script I thought the role was terrific. I thought it was an opportunity to really do a transformation. Right away I knew I wanted to do something in which I’d be unrecognizable, where the role would really take over. And I love action films, particularly something that takes place in such an exotic [setting], and the weaponry would be strange and different and it would be really demanding. So I was really looking forward to it.

About your character’s look — you wanted to be “unrecognizable” and Khalar Zym is certainly a transformative role for you. He looks almost Klingon-like, even. Yes, she’s wonderful. She plays my daughter. But I thought the departments did a superb job in bringing it to life. You know, that land that Robert Howard describes — it’s unlike any other, so you have to bring something hopefully unique and very vivid to it, and everybody did.

Speaking of unique takes on the material, Jason Momoa ’s Conan is such a departure from the iconic Arnold Schwarzenegger portrayal. How did you two get along and strike your chemistry on set? Well, I didn’t know him when I showed up but I liked him from the first day we started working together. He’s very powerful. I thought we were a good match-up together, we were strength to strength, I thought.
