Great Wall Motor Starts Operation of Tianjin Plant

TIANJIN, Aug 29, 2011 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Great Wall Motor Co., Ltd. (sehk:2333), one of China's famous indigenous automakers, just formally put a new factory into operation in Tianjin, a northern Chinese port city close to Beijing.

Meanwhile, the automaker, based in Baoding, an industrial city in the northern Chinese province of Hebei, formally launched the Hover H6, its first medium- and high-grade city SUV model.

The Tianjin factory, covering an area of about 5,350 mu (1 mu = 667 square meters), is expected to have four functions. Firstly, it will be capable of annually turning out 400,000 complete vehicles. Moreover, it will be responsible for the production in the form of CKD or KD.

Besides, the factory will serve as an auto parts industrial park and an export logistics production base. After the whole project is completed, its output value is predicted to surpass CNY 100 billion, with several SUV and B-class sedan models put into production.

Great Wall Motor, once specializing in the production of pickups and SUVs, has marched into the sedan manufacturing field. Now, it has exported its products to more than 100 countries, and set up sales networks in over 70 countries around the globe.

In 2011, the Chinese automaker plans to export 80,000 vehicles and go on expanding its market share in the European Union (EU).

All these show that Great Wall Motor has started a faster expansion, and the Tianjin factory may become a take-off board of its new strategy, said analysts.

In addition to the expansion of its production capacity and the launch of new models, the automaker has been working on its plan of going public on the A-share market these days.

The China Securities Regulatory Commission said that on August 3, 2011, it approved Great Wall Motor to kick off an IPO on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

The Haval 6 was recently introduced at GWM's new factory in Tianjin, in the northern Chinese province of Hebei. The state-of-the-art factory has an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles. Great Wall Motors expects to build a variety of vehicles at the plant besides the Haval H6, including the Voleex C20R and C30. The company also makes the intriguingly named "Wingle" and "Coolbear". You may not know their name, but Great Wall Motors currently exports their vehicles to over 120 countries and regions including Africa, Australia, Melanesia, the Middle East, Russia, South America, South Asia, and the South Pacific. At present it's the only Chinese automaker with a sales presence in the EU. Could the United States be next? By setting up assembly plants in over 10 countries outside China, the company is following in the footsteps of Japanese automakers such as Honda, Nissan and Toyota who have established successful and profitable factories in the United States and other countries.
